A Wedding Blessing

I just returned from visiting a friend and in my room was framed the Apache Wedding Blessing.  As I read it, I was touched by its beauty.  This was actually my first time reading this poem.

“Now you will feel no rain for each of you will be shelter for the other. Now you will feel no cold for each of you will be warmth for the other. Now there is no more loneliness. Now you are two persons, but there is only one life before you.  May your days together be good and long upon the earth”

July 15th was the first anniversary of my son and my cherished daughter-in-LOVE.  I made a mental note to share this with them but as I read the poem for the third time, I felt that this blessing I have been receiving from my husband for 35 years.  With profound gratitude, I thank you.

I was curious about the history of this wedding blessing and went straight to one of many “advisors”—Google.  Interesting that this Apache Wedding Blessing has nothing to do with the Apache wedding ceremony, but was written for a scene in a novel entitled Blood Brother by Elliott Arnold in 1947. In 1950 It was made into a movie called “Broken Arrow” by Albert Maltz where the blessing was put on screen.

From the novel, “Blood Brother”, and its author, Elliott Arnold, to the screenwriter of “Broken Arrow” Albert Maltz, and to my friend who had this framed in her guest room; I send this message to my son and his bride to begin their second year of marriage and I send it to all who this speaks to.

Much love
