Chatting with Gabby Remote Learning

My granddaughter started writing her blog when COVID began while she was confined.

I only just found out a few days ago when her mother sent some of her blogs to me.

After reading them, I asked Gabby if I could share some of her writings with others.

Here is the first of five blog posts.

Welcome to "Chatting with Gabby," where we delve into the compelling stories and experiences that shape the lives of young individuals navigating the challenges of the modern world. In today's blog post, we will explore the profound impact of remote learning on students in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through the heartfelt reflections of Gabriella Patrick, a resilient student navigating the uncharted territories of virtual education, we gain insights into the struggles, emotions, and unexpected discoveries that have defined this transformative period in education.

The Harsh Reality of Covid

From a 9th grade Student

The Impact of Remote Learning on Students

“My whole perception of life as I know it has changed. I went from laughing with my friends to no communication at all. I went from an interactive learning experience to learning on an app called Zoom ( I’m not even really sure what half of my classmates look like). Bright computer screens illuminate my face, and the words, “ Can you please unmute yourself” has painfully become my reality. How did things change so quickly, I was just in school. Well, at first I thought it was just a prolonged break. “Yay no school, right”? Or so I thought. I would have never imagined that I would never see half of my friends again. I was in 8th grade and my golden 9th grade was supposed to be the start of high school. I had envisioned the high school as this fun place where I get to meet new people and take cool classes. Instead, I am sitting right now on this Chrome book typing my life away because I have nothing better today. My days are the same. Wake up a little late for Zoom class, eat lunch, and then sleep. Boring blank pages of my story. I hope and pray life doesn’t stay like this.”

Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about significant changes in the way we live and learn. One of the most significant changes has been the shift to remote learning, where students attend classes virtually from home. While remote learning has helped to curb the spread of the virus, it has also had a profound impact on students' lives. In this blog post, we will explore the impact of remote learning on students.

Challenges Faced by Students

Remote learning has brought with it a host of challenges for students. One of the biggest challenges is the lack of social interaction. Students are no longer able to interact with their peers in person, which can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness. Additionally, remote learning requires students to be self-motivated and self-disciplined, which can be difficult for some students. Students also face technical challenges, such as internet connectivity issues and difficulty navigating online platforms.

Effects on Mental Health

The shift to remote learning has also had a significant impact on student's mental health. The lack of social interaction and the stress of remote learning can lead to increased feelings of anxiety and depression. Students may also experience a sense of loss due to missed opportunities, such as prom and graduation. The lack of structure in their daily routines can also contribute to feelings of uncertainty and anxiety.

Academic Impact

Remote learning has also affected students' academic performance. Students may have difficulty staying focused during virtual classes, leading to a decrease in learning retention and engagement. The lack of access to in-person resources, such as tutors and libraries, can also impact academic performance. Additionally, students may be at a disadvantage if they do not have access to reliable internet or technology.

Conclusion

The shift to remote learning has been a challenging experience for students. It has brought with it a host of challenges, including a lack of social interaction, technical difficulties, and academic setbacks. The impact on student's mental health has also been significant, with increased feelings of anxiety and depression. As we continue to navigate this pandemic, it is essential to prioritize the well-being of students and provide them with the resources and support they need to succeed in this new learning environment.

Gabby's journey through remote learning has not only inspired countless students but is also a testament to the strength and resilience found within us all. By the way, Gabby will be starting her senior year in high school this Fall and I am a very proud grandmother.
